Horse Insurance – Medical and Surgical Coverage Options.
Brief descriptions of the types of additional insurance protection for your horse that may be added to a Full Mortality policy are outlined here. Please note that recently tightened availability, eligibility requirements and restrictions vary from one insurance company to another.
Coverage may be added to your Full Mortality policy by endorsement. (It is not available without mortality insurance on the animal.) The company will pay reasonable and customary veterinarian fees for covered surgical procedures, medical treatment or diagnostic testing provided to your horse due to an accident, injury, lameness condition, illness or disease. Note that pre-existing or chronic conditions that are evident at time of application are not covered. A deductible may apply per occurrence and there may be a co-pay provision. Depending on the insurance carrier, this coverage is available to eligible horses to age 20. Limits Offered: $7,500, $10,000, and $15,000.
Coverage can be added to the mortality policy to reimburse you for reasonable and customary fees for surgical treatment performed on an insured animal at a school of veterinary medicine or a surgical clinic. A deductible may apply and there may be a co-insurance provision. Extra covered expenses vary from one company to another. Limits Offered: $5,000 and $10,000.
This option is limited to coverage for reasonable and customary veterinary fees incurred for colic treatment by a qualified veterinarian. A deductible and co-insurance may apply. (This option is available for race horses.) The limit offered for eligible animals is $10,000 or $3,000, depending on the carrier.
If eligible, it may be possible to obtain higher limits than those outlined under the three options above by stacking any of the equine Medical, Surgical and Colic endorsements.
The amount of mortality insurance requested must be substantiated (usually with show records). If a recent purchase (within past 12 months), you generally cannot insure for more than purchase price. The amount of insurance can be reviewed when applying for renewal of the policy.
